So I'm leaving for Athens in a couple of hours, don't know when I will have my next internet connection.
Crete was interesting. Very scenic, very pretty, but it's the sort of place which, I think, would be better when not on one's own. I mean, I love travelling by myself usually, but I just didn't enjoy it here.
Got a car, went to see Knossos, drove around, sat in the sun reading my book. Driving here is bloody terrifying, not because I am on the other side of the road, rather because they're all crazy, and road rules...what road rules? I managed to scrape the car in the middle of one particularly hectic town, when trying to escape the immenent death approaching me from the road in the opposite lane. Oops. 450 euros down the drain. Ugh.
Then yesterday, I was driving round the mountains, completely lost, and I ended up in some little resort village, with an empty tank of petrol. I go to ask where I can get some, and am told that there is no petrol anywhere, because someoneorother is on strike. So I was 77km from home, with no petrol, and a mountain range to cross. So I started out for Heraklion, watching my tank get lower and lower, crying, bawling in fact and hoping that I wouldn't get stranded in too remote an area, and praying that I would make it, because there was nothing else to do.
Luckily, 63km from Heraklion I saw a huge line-up of cars outside a petrol station, and miracle of miracles, managed to get gas. However by then I was so shaken that I didn't go and find a beach to swim at, which was the day's plan, but went home and sat around the town drinking coffee and moping.
Also, whilst in the mountains, I saw a little old greek lady putting her hand out for a lift, and since there was like, nobody else on the road, I stopped to pick her up. She didn't speak a word of English, but I gave her a lift to the next town. It was rather funny really.
So yes, off to Athens. I presume I will enjoy it more, as there are many more things to do. 5 days though...I'll have to take some day tours out of the city I think.
All in all, I think that this is my least favourite holiday ever.
